What’s the Difference between LED and LCD?

Both LED and LCD displays are relatively common video displays on the market. LCD screens are usually used for LCD TVs. LED screens are mainly used for video display of commercial advertisements and background matching for stage performances.

When you visit airports, railway stations, bus stations, shopping malls, theme parks, restaurants, casinos, stadiums and museums you will most likely come across a digital display, which is used to give directions and provide information.

If you want to judge which is better between LED display and LCD display, you must first understand what they are. Not only can our team help you with this but this article should help you understand a little better.

What does LED Display Stand For?

LED (Light-Emitting Diode) is a semiconductor light source that emits light when current flows through it. Electrons in the semiconductor recombine with electron holes, releasing energy in the form of photons.

 Light emitting diode

The LED display is composed of many small LED panels. Each LED panel is called an LED module, which is composed of a large number of LED pixel pitches arranged in a matrix. The distance of each LED pixel is called pixel pitch. The LED screen can be customized and scaled to any shape or size. Those with a dot pitch below P5 (including P5) are used indoors, and those with a dot pitch below P2 are called small-pitch LED displays, which are used in places where the viewing distance is relatively close. The pixel pitch is above P5, such as P6, P8, P10, etc., which are often used in outdoor, which is very suitable for large-scale arenas.

The advantage of LED display:

1. The brightest screen offerings.

2. Weatherproof and suitable for outdoor use.

3. Deep saturated colors with a wide color gamut, no screen bezel or gap.

4. Energy-efficient.

5. Flexible design, quick and easy setup, components are easily repairable on-site.

The disadvantage of LED display:

1. It is more costly.

2. It have restricted viewing angle.

What does LCD display stand for?

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) is a flat-panel display or other electronically modulated optical device. Liquid crystals do not emit light directly, instead using a backlight or reflector to produce images in color or monochrome.

LCD screens are normally seen in smaller more consumer-driven displays, such as computer monitors or TVs. This screen option is ideal for small applications where an affordable but high-quality display is needed. Additionally, with a wide range of connectivity options, these screens are versatile.

The advantage of LCD display:

1. Lightweight, allowing quick and easy rigging.

2. Versatile connectivity with standard connections being VGA, HDMI, composite component, DVI and S-video output.

3. Adequate level of brightness for all indoor applications.

The disadvantage of LCD display:

1. Screen bezels and gaps.

2. The screen’s size is limited, with larger screens carrying a hefty price tag.

3. Brightness is not adequate for outdoor applications in daylight.

Which is better, LED display or LCD display?

Colors & Brightness

The LED itself emits light. This means that each pixel is a light source. The LED display can directly control the brightness by providing different voltages. The LCD cannot emit light by itself. It can only reflect and filter the background light source. No matter how hard you try, the LCD still has that dim feeling when presenting images.

high performance

Energy Saving

As mentioned above, LED screens emit light, LCD screens block light. In order to reach the same level of brightness, LCD consumes way more electricity than LED. More importantly, most of the energy consumed by LCD screen is not transformed into the display light, because the light is blocked at the background! As a result, for commercial use billboards, LED is a more energy saving choice.

Viewing Angle

The LED display can reach a viewing angle of 165°, and the video display is still clear. However, the viewing angle of LCD is very limited. If the viewing angle is slightly larger, it will not be clear and the video will become blurry.

Seamless Stitching

The LED screen can realize seamless splicing of large screens, and it can splice displays of various shapes according to the needs of the project, such as LED special-shaped screens, curved, circles, columns, and polygons. When LCD are spliced together, there will be a relatively large gap between each LCD module. If the viewing distance is far, the viewing effect will not be affected, but if the viewing distance is short, the gap of the large LCD screen becomes more obvious.

We understand that price, size and location are big consideration when deciding which digital signage is suitable for you. We can discuss LED and LCD over the phone or via email. We’d love to guide you in the right direction and cater your signage experience to your business.
